New Year Concert on Jan. 4 at Bowdoin College, Brunswick

400px-Bowdoin-chapel-winterFollowing the tradition of Christmas lasting 12 days, our program concludes the holiday season and celebrates the New Year.  Soprano Barbara Kilduff, pianist Brian Moll, and tenor Gerald Seminatore will perform seasonal songs, arias, and duets by J.S. Bach, Benjamin Britten, Georg Frederic Handel, Ralph Vaughn Williams, and others.

This is a singular opportunity to experience the work of accomplished artists in the intimate environment of the historic Chapel at Bowdoin College. Leave the cold outside and join us for a soulful concert of repertoire for the winter season.

BARBARA KILDUFF (soprano). Appearances at Metropolitan Opera, La Scale, Bavarian State Opera, Vienna State Opera. Soloist with many orchestras. Active recitalist.

GERALD SEMINATORE (tenor). Critically acclaimed soloist in opera and concert throughout the United States and in Europe, including Dortmund, Frankfurt, Kaiserslautern, and Bremen (Germany), as well Santa Fe, Glimmerglass, West Bay, and other theaters. Many song recitals with emphasis on the German Lied and works of Benjamin Britten.

BRIAN MOLL (piano). Pianist in recitals in Austria, Germany, Switzerland, France, Japan, and the United States. Assistant Conductor for Boston Lyric Opera and Opera North. Chair of Vocal and Keyboard Studies, Longy School of Music of Bard College.

7:30 start time. Doors open at 7:00.

No pre-sale for tickets, $15 general admission at the door, $10 discount for students/seniors and Bowdoin Friends and staff. Cash or personal check only, please.

Free parking is easily accessible on Park Row, just off of Maine Street on the western perimeter of the Bowdoin campus. A map of the Bowdoin College campus can be downloaded here.

The Chapel entrance is wheelchair/walker accessible. You may wish to bring a cushion.

Southern California Concerts for World AIDS Day 2012

UPDATED NOV. 6, 2012. THIS SPACIOUS VISION will present concerts
of English and American art song in observance
of World AIDS Day 2012.

Selections from the AIDS Quilt Songbook will stand at the center of each concert. The programs will also include songs by Leonard Bernstein, Benjamin Britten, Aaron Copland, Richard Hundley, and others.

The AIDS Quilt was conceived in 1987 as a memorial to those who were suffering and from the virus that would come to be known as HIV. Artists also became catalysts of energy and advocacy for AIDS awareness and HIV research and education, and the AIDS Quilt Songbook followed in 1991 as a musical response to the growing pandemic of HIV/AIDS. 2012 marks the twentieth anniversary of the first performances of songs from the collection. While much has changed in our understanding of HIV and how to treat HIV/AIDS, the poems and songs of the collection stand as potent reminders of the work still to be done in treating HIV/AIDS and curbing the spread of HIV around the world.

The composers who contributed to the Songbook include some of the most notable contemporary names in American music, such as Ricky Ian Gordon, John Harbison, and John Musto. Other songs on the concert by composers such as Leonard Bernstein, Benjamin Britten and Aaron Copland speak powerfully to experiences of community, love, nostalgia and loss in modern life.

The roster of acclaimed performers for these concerts will include baritone John Seesholtz, tenor Gerald Seminatore, and pianist Christopher Reed. They will be joined by actress Diana Burbano and cellist Sean Fischer for a unique program of poetry, song, and remembrance.

A portion of ticket proceeds will be donated to AIDS service organizations. Additional donations for the Long Beach AIDS Foundation will be gratefully accepted.

Directions to Bay Shore Community Church in Long Beach/Belmont Shore are here. Church parking is available in the lot at the corner of Livingston and The Toledo on a first-come, first-served basis, and on neighboring streets. (No permits required). The charming 2nd Street commercial and retail area of Belmont Shore is within easy walking distance of the church, and a user-friendly map of the neighborhood (including locations for public parking lots) is here.
